The Henry Farm Inn, a center hall Federal built in the late 1700's, is located in Chester, Vermont on the Green Mountain Turnpike and holds a significant place in Chester's history. Henry Farm Inn Bed and Breakfast, Chester Vermont Our well-maintained two hundred year old farmhouse was the first tavern in Chester, when it served as a stagecoach stop on the Green Mountain Turnpike. In colonial times this turnpike ran from Boston to Montreal, but now is a quiet, picturesque dirt road for us to treasure, perfect for biking, walking or a peaceful drive off the beaten path. The Henry Farm Inn offers a private country setting, but is only minutes away from the charming and historic Victorian village of Chester. Henry Farm Inn Bed and Breakfast, Chester Vermont The Henry Farm Inn has retained the charm of its earlier days and we welcome guests who appreciate the Inn for its authenticity and simple early American décor. When you arrive we'll give you the "grand tour" to see for yourself how our rooms are enhanced by the original wide pumpkin-pine floors (the largest one measures almost two feet wide!), our eight Rumford fireplaces, original hand-hewn beams, a beehive oven in the dining room fireplace, a hearth oven in our wonderful country kitchen, authentic Moses Eaton stenciling, and, Chester's first hot water bathtub. Our beautiful, natural surroundings speak for themselves - come enjoy the view from our wonderful back porch swing and treasure the Vermont countryside with us! We cordially invite you to relax in our refreshingly friendly and casual atmosphere. Our goal is to create an Inn that is warm and comforting, just like home.

Experience historic elegance in this circa 1867 French Second Empire Vermont Bed & Breakfast on the village green in Fair Haven, Vermont.  You are invited to come unwind in the opulence of a 19th century marble mansion and marvel at twelve foot high ceilings decorated with intricate Georgian style plaster crown moldings & ceiling medallions, and the twin marble fireplaces in the double-parlor with gleaming herringbone pattern wood floors and crystal chandeliers. We are offering a unique experience by taking in the history of the mansion.  Built in 1867 in the French Second Empire style with mansard roof by relatives of Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen, the Allen family was one of Vermont‘s first marble investors.  At the time, marble was readily available and inexpensive to harvest so Ira Allen built a grand home made of Vermont marble. The intricacies in mansion make it unique in character and grandeur.  From hand carved marble mantles around seven fireplaces to the plaster crown moldings, step back in time when cost was measured by the finished product and not by the hours to complete the job. History of the Marble Mansion Standing on 1.78 acres on the Green in Fair Haven, Vermont, the Marble Mansion Inn is a twenty-two room 6,400 square foot French Second Empire mansion complete with mansard roof, belvidère, and porte cochère. The Hon. Ira C. Allen The big marble house was built in 1867 by the Honorable Ira C. Allen, a prominent businessman of the Fair Haven community; born in Bristol, Vermont in 1816, Allen was the grandson of a cousin of American Revolutionary War patriot Ethan Allen.  He was married to Mary E. Richardson, daughter of C. Richardson of Geneva, New York, in 1855 and they had four children: Charles, Ira, Jessie, and Francis. Ira C Allen A banking and railroad magnate, Allen had interests in marble, slate, and real estate.  He also served as a state representative, 1861-62 and a state senator, 1867-68 in the Vermont State Legislature and was one of the founders of the Vermont Academy in Saxton’s River, Vermont.  He served on the Academy’s board of trustees for many years. The Mansion (built 1866-67) In 1866, Ira C. Allen bought the property from Judge William Kittredge who had a house on the property.  This house was removed to another site.  Moving houses was common in those days because it was cheaper than building or buying.  The house was placed on rollers and as horses pulled it, the rollers were moved from back to front.  The marble came from Proctor and according to the story, each piece of marble was numbered and lay on the lawn for quite some time before it was used in construction. Grandfather (Ira C.) Allen and his family moved in on January 1, 1868. The parlors were not furnished.  Two hot air furnaces and coal stoves were in the dining room.  In 1870 with two large cisterns well water was brought in and pumped to the second floor.  With running water on the second floor baths and toilets were put in.  Two years later the town of Fair Haven put in water works.  The parlor was furnished at a cost of $4,000. At first the marble house was piped for gas with kerosene lights; then in 1893 the house was wired for and became the first house in Fair Haven to have electricity.  All the marble was brought from West Rutland by ox teams and had sheet lead put in between. The Allen & Vail Families Upon his death Ira C. Allen left the marble house to his four children: Charles R. Allen, Ira R. Allen, Jessie A. Allen, and Francis Allen.  The eldest, Charles R. Allen, resided at the mansion with his wife Jessie Dailey Allen and his family.  Charles’ siblings Jessie A. Allen and Francis Allen boarded at the home at this time.  Eventually the three sons sold their shares to Jessie in 1889 for $15,000. In 1903 Jessie conveyed it to George Vail for the sum of $1.00.  George was married to Elizabeth Allen, a relative of the Allen family.  When Elizabeth (Aunt Libby) Allen Vail died, the marble house was taken over by Aaron Vail Allen, Sr. and his wife Rebecca.  Their son, Sherman Vail Allen became the next in line and upon his death in 1975 the mansion was sold and left the Allen family. Intervening Years The mansion changed hands a number of times between 1975 and 2009, being both a private residence and at times an inn.

We offer exceptional vacation packages and romantic getaways in Vermont. We look forward to seeing you soon! History The Joslyn Round Barn was built by Clem Joslyn in 1910. Clem eventually sold the Farm to his cousin Ralph, who spelled his last name, Joslyn, with an “i” (go figure!). It was used as a dairy barn from 1910 until 1969, when Marge “Joslin” said to Ralph, “Either the cows go, or I go.” Marge and Ralph stayed until 1986 when Jack and Doreen Simko bought the Round Barn Farm in March of that year. They spent eighteen months restoring the farmhouse into a seven guestroom Vermont Inn, and then turned their attention to restoring the Round Barn. Round Barn Restoration The Barn restoration began in June of 1988 and was completed in June of 1990. During the restoration, the entire barn was jacked up, and a new concrete foundation was poured to replace the original crumbling stone foundation. A new insulated roof was added, the cedar shakes were replaced, the clapboards were repaired and repainted, and the hand-hewn timbers were reinforced or authentically replaced. In 1992, four additional guest rooms were added to the Inn in the Horse Barn area of the extended farmhouse, thus completing the entire structural restoration. In 1999 a new suite, the Abbott Suite, was added. In 1988 the Joslyn Round Barn was proudly registered in the National Registry of Historic Places. Unlike the early 1900′s when the Round Barn was a working dairy barn, the structure now hosts many community events and Inn-related activities. Weddings, concerts, art exhibits, and conferences are all held inside the twelve circular walls of the Barn. The ground floor houses our lap pool and greenhouse. During your stay, please feel free to take a step back in time, and appreciate the unusual splendor of the Joslyn Round Barn. View the Round Barn Farm Restoration Gallery Round Barns in Vermont The concept of the Round Barn originated with the religious group the Shakers. Some say the Shakers built their barns this way because “the devil can’t catch you in the corners”. For the farmers, round barns were very efficient because they utilize the laws of gravity. Large farm equipment was driven up the raceway into the Hayloft (top level) for storage and could be driven straight out. There was no backing out of corners in a round barn. The milking parlor (middle level) was home to many dairy cows that were herded in and out of the barn in a circle. There were trap doors in the floor of the stanchioned milking parlor to shovel manure directly into the wagons waiting in the bottom level to haul it out onto the fields. There were a total of twenty-five round barns built in Vermont, four of which were in the Mad River Valley. Today, there are only five round barns remaining in Vermont.
