Whitfield House is an early Federal-Style brick home which was built in 1782 by Samuel Jackson, a wealthy merchant. The house was willed to his married daughter, Mary Russell. Generations of the Russell Family lived in the house for the next two hundred years until it was sold in 1987, for the first time in its history, to its current owner Dr. Brian Whitfield. The Russells were ship captains, investment bankers, and co-founders of the world’s famous rope manufacturing company located in Plymouth known as The Cordage Company.
1987 Restoration
Dr. Whitfield has restored the home and has furnished it with antiques, oriental rugs, and period accessories in a historically eclectic fashion to reflect the elegant tastes of the 18th and 19th centuries as if the home was still occupied by the original owners who profited from both the Asian and European trades. Once inside the garden gate and through the front door, the house carries you back to a gentler, more gracious period of history while still offering you the conveniences of the 21st century. Dr. Whitfield’s sister, Barbara Marley of California, has come to Whitfield House to be your most welcoming hostess and to help make your stay in Plymouth an enjoyable experience.
